Service Learning Canvas

Developed by Halberstadt & Schank (2017), the Service Learning Canvas has been designed to help students structure their Service Learning project. The Canvas

  • is based on the Business Model Canvas (Osterwalder & Pigneur, 2010; Osterwalder et al., 2011)
  • was adapted to the specific issues students encounter in Service Learning projects, especially in their work with cooperation partners
  • was developed on the basis of scientific findings gained from lead question-supported interviews with experts (Euler et al., 2017)
  • is based on existing tools designed for the structured processing of various issues relevant in the Service Learning context

The Canvas focuses on the development of a concrete project, approach or service for a social, ecological or charitable partner organisation. The process kicks off with detailed analysis of the status quo, followed by project development.

Project development is shaped by the factors set out by the Canvas under the headings of ‘Required resources’ and ‘Tasks’. Modifications in individual fields result in changes in other fields. This facilitates the identification of key parameters which can be adjusted to arrive at the most successful and sustainable solution.
